Visit to the Oxfordshire Records Office

I visited the Oxfordshire Records Office yesterday. While I was there I collected information from several of the Henley registration district parish registers and a couple of the Abingdon ones. Contact me if you have any ancestors in that area.

Their ten children, John, Thomas, William, Mary, Mercy, Henry, Charles, George, Maria and James were all born in Inkpen.

James Swadling (1851 - 1935)

My great Grandfather James Swadling was the youngest son of John Swadling and Mary Underwood and was born in a little village of Inkpen in Berkshire on the 30th January 1851. After their marriage they moved to Wednesbury in Staffordshire and had six children, Frank Edward, Ada Mary, Kate, George, Frederick and Dora Emily.

Between 1893 and 1901 James moved his family to Birmingham, Warwickshire. He died in 1935 and was buried in the parish church in Erdington, Birmingham.

Census records

Have you found your Swadling ancestor on the 1881 census? Did they come from London, Sussex, Berkshire or Buckinghamshire? Where were they on the 1901 census?

Elizabeth Swaddling from Eastbourne was listed under Swaddlings on the 1901 census. She had moved to London and was working as a Domestic Cook in Paddington.

Ethelbert Swadling was born in Canterbury, Kent in 1870. His father was a Bookbinder and the family moved to Hitchin in Hertfordshire before the 1881 census was taken. By 1891 Ethelbert was working as a hairdresser in Hitchin. I wonder why he became a hairdresser?

Can't find a Swadling? Post a message.

Guild of One-Name Studies Seminar

I attended the Guild of One-Name Studies "Publishing your One-Name Study Seminar" at Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes yesterday and because of the very informative talk given by one the speakers, Teresa Pask, I have decided to create a Blog for my One-Name Study.
